CrossFit Endurance: Programming for Military Athletes

In this video, CrossFit Endurance coach John McBrien shares endurance programming tips for military athletes—athletes already in the military, athletes in a military school or athletes training to enter service.

McBrien says CrossFit Endurance training for the military begins with CrossFit five to six times per week, with more volume to mimic the increased volume of military training. In addition to CrossFit, McBrien adds CrossFit Endurance to the programming two to three times per week using two different approaches.

One approach is to use military programming as sports-specific running with weight. For the first week, you would add weight to one or two intervals, and for the second week you would rotate and add weight to the longer runs.

Another approach is to use military programming as multi-sport training, with running, carrying heavy weight and swimming as separate “sports.” Each would have a frequency of twice a week.

“You’re basically taking the single-sport prescription/multi-sport prescription and you’re twisting it based on the needs of that military athlete,” McBrien says.

The 2011 Europe Regional: Part 1

What was it like to experience the Europe Regional? Join Sevan Matossian on a journey through Reebok Stadium to witness the crowds, the athletes and the battle to get to the Home Depot Center in California.

In Part 1, Matossian interviews the athletes and organizers, catching the set-up and first day of competition.

Annie Thorisdottir is among the competitors although she is pre-qualified for the Games.

“You always gain something from a competition,” she says. “Of course, I’m hoping that nothing will surprise me, but better to get the surprise here than at the Games.”

Thorisdottir says she prepared for the competition as she would a weekend of tough workouts, without any tapering or working toward peak performance.

“I’m of course going to peak at the Games,” she says.

The early leaders among the women include Thorisdottir and Samantha Briggs. Among the men, Tuomas Vainio and Mikko Aronpää both vie for first and second.

Of course, the other Mikko, an organizer at the regional, will also be a fierce competitor at the Games. Says his coach and mentor Juha Kangasniemi, “I still think that he’s the most powerful engine in the world—nobody can beat him in the long, heavy met-cons … and that’s CrossFit.”

Slow food underground in DC

Amazing dinner made from all local farms in the DC area: lamb brat w/sauerkraut, collard saute, brussels+bacon

Vacationing as a real-foodie or farm-fundamentalist isn’t exactly easy or inexpensive anywhere geographically if you don’t live there and have a chance to figure things out over time. While local vegetables are slightly more available, quality meats aren’t abundant in any city (it is as yet more acceptable to plant some veggies on a city lot than to raise animals). I googled the internet dry for combinations of “DC” with words like “urban farm”, ”grass-finished”, “paleo”, “meat share”, “charcuterie”, etc. There are a handful of three dollar-sign and up restaurants that program it into their menus, but we only have so many of those budgeted.

I wanted to find a meat share or a grocer so I could cook a chunk of my meals, meet the local food activist circuit and support with my vacation dollars. There are plenty of Whole Foods (and Yes Organics), but the cognitive dissonance I experience supporting establishments like WF leaves me strongly preferring the effort of seeking out the real food underground even on my vacation. Raw dairy sellers are the place to start a search, but being in DC I figured any purveyors of raw dairy would be quite underground since I’m at the heart (or I guess it would be the brain) of the war raging against it. If you haven’t checked out Farmageddon by now, do.

Wandering the neighborhood we’re staying in we stumbled upon an unlisted grocer. Tuned to the right frequency, a dense vegetable garden, ‘local dairy’ painted on a side wall, and the picture window filled with shelves and not curtains screams ‘real food sold here!’ Indeed, the house was a clean, organized warehouse stocked with freezers and fridges filled with all the goods a paleo guy or gal could need. After a refreshing conversation with a well-informed owner, we were stocked for the next few days and got invited to BBQ with them for the 4th.

At the neighborhood farmer’s market the pastured animal scene is alive and well and the management-intensive animal husbandry methods a la Salatin are alive and well. Look out for much-anticipated pics and video from Joel Salatin’s farm next weekend at the Polyface Farms triennial event in Swoope, VA!
